China is booming, and the economic growth goes well beyond early winners like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
This map shows 30 cities worthy of a serious look by investors, some now, some down the road.
A note on Chinese populations:
Counting how many people live in any Chinese city is an imperfect science. For this dataset, we’ve relied on a variety of sources, including government websites, published reports and other online resources.
Part of the problem is the population itself. Chinese cities have been undergoing a massive growth spurt since 1978, when the government first began letting people move to urban areas en masse. Most of this movement is legal, and counted in official surveys. Residents register with local authorities in order to receive government services, such as health and education. But unofficial migration is also widespread, and most cities have large segments that remain uncounted (and unserved).
Further blurring statistics is the way a city is defined. In Dalian, for example, the urban center–what might be called the city proper–is home to about 2 million people. Add in the surrounding “towns” such as Zhuanghe (pop. 700,000) or Pulandian (pop. 900,000)–both of which are a mix of city and countryside–and the total is above 6 million. Different sources count different areas, making a definitive number hard to come by.
This is a long way of saying: Take these numbers with a grain of salt, and please, forgive us if you’ve seen a different number elsewhere.

Maximum file size allowed for import: 2 Mega bytes.
Google Spreadsheet must be named ZeeMap-91249
Google Spreadsheet must
have view access for user zeemaps at gmail dot com
Use Refresh to update from an already uploaded spreadsheet that is set for
automatic refresh. For this to work,
the spreadsheet columns must not have changed since first upload.
A large import (few thousand entries) can take a few hours.
You can speed large imports by not giving a street
address, or adding latitude and longitude
If you do not supply a country column, it will default to US
Create a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file from Excel, ACT!,
Outlook or other programs. Your CSV file must have a heading
row, followed by one row for each map entry:

The table above has two entries and one heading row. The heading
row contains names of fields (e.g., Name and Street) for each
entry.
You must have at least one field called "Name". In
addition, you must specify fields to determine the location of
each entry. For US, Canada or UK entries, a location can be
minimally specified by a postcode and country. For other
countries, we must have at least city and country. If you do not
have the addresses for your entries, you also can specify 'Latitude'
and 'Longitude' columns.
Use a 'Color' heading for different colored markers. Currently, we
support the colors: black, blue, brown, burgundy, cloud, forest, fuscia,
green, grey, lavender, light blue, light green, light purple, light yellow,
maize, mold, olive, orange, purple, red, red dust, sky, spring, sunset,
teal, tree, white and yellow.
Any heading that does not specify a name, location, color or
Photo URL will define additional fields to be stored with each
entry on your map. For the above table, Telephone and Email are
additional fields for the two entries.
