What Are the Seven Wonders of the World?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The term “wonders of the world” refers to extraordinary landmarks that showcase both the pinnacle of human achievement and the awe-inspiring power of nature. Over time, several lists of “wonders” have been compiled. But, the most notable are the Ancient Wonders and the more recent New Seven Wonders of the World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 7 Ancient Wonders of the World<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Ancient Wonders were originally compiled by Greek scholars and travelers, as far back as 484 B.C., as a way to catalog the most remarkable man-made structures of the known world. At the Museum of Alexandria, scholars kept early lists. You’ll notice on the map that most of these early wonders are in that tight geographic region, between Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Iraq. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seven Ancient Wonders of the World are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Great Pyramid of Giza<\/strong> \u2013 Egypt (the only wonder still standing today)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon<\/strong> \u2013 Iraq (location debated, possibly mythical)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia<\/strong> \u2013 Greece<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus<\/strong> \u2013 Turkey<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus<\/strong> \u2013 Turkey<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Colossus of Rhodes<\/strong> \u2013 Greece<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Lighthouse of Alexandria<\/strong> \u2013 Egypt<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Celebrated for their architectural and artistic excellence, sadly, most of the sites are now destroyed by natural disasters or war. However, you can still visit the locations of these impressive monuments, noted on our interactive map below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The New Seven Wonders of the World<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    In 2001, the New 7 Wonders Foundation<\/a> launched a global initiative to identify a new set of wonders, aiming to celebrate iconic monuments that still stand today. Today, the organization invests in “monument preservation and reconstruction around the world.” To that end, they have also established lists of Middle Age Wonders, Civil Engineering Wonders, Man-made Wonders, Natural Wonders, and Underwater Wonders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Over 100 million people voted in a worldwide poll. And, in Lisbon on July 7, 2007, the New Seven Wonders of the World were announced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    7. Taj Mahal<\/strong> \u2013 India<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Chosen not only for their architectural brilliance and historical significance, these sites also have a huge cultural impact on the modern world. Together, the ancient and new wonders represent humanity’s enduring desire to build, create, and leave behind lasting legacies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
