Edit own markers in wiki-maps

ZeeMaps now has a much-requested functionality: the ability for users to edit or remove markers that they have added on someone else’s map.
When you add a marker to a map that you have not created yourself, in the past you had to remember a special URL generated by ZeeMaps when the marker was added. If you did not remember this URL, and the map admin had password protected the map, there was no way for you to make changes to your own marker.
With the new functionality, if you come back to the map from the same browser that you used to create the marker, you will be able to edit the information. To do so, click on the marker to open its information balloon and then click on the marker name. This will bring up an edit dialog that will allow you to make changes to your entry. You can also relocate, or remove the marker using one of the small icons to the right bottom of the information balloon.

This will work on the ZeeMaps site as well as on other sites where a map has been published. If someone adds a marker to a map on your site, they will be able to edit it without leaving your site. We use cookies for this feature, so users will need to visit the map with the same cookies-enabled browser.

    • Hello,

Accounts are free to create. From there navigate to your map. On the map, click the map marker you want to edit or delete, then click the title in the pop-up (it will be in blue). From there you can edit or delete the map marker

      Thanks for the inquiry!

  • For clarification – if all members have the same member key can all members edit each other’s markers? I’m trying to determine if it’s doable for members to edit only their own markers and not all members. This is the free version, for the record. I can’t really test it from a member point of view because it’s the same browser. I use incognito and sign in as member access but then I can edit or delete all the markers I put up to test. It’s for a treasure cache so members would need to edit their own entries to change the marker color for a status change. Is this doable? What’s the best/correct setting to make this work, if it’s doable?

    • Hi Kara,
Once members are allowed to edit entries, they can edit any entry whether their own or not. We do have limited features for users to edit their own entries: (1) on laptop or desktops they are given an edit URL when they add an entry. When they visit that URL, they can edit that entry from anywhere. (2) when users visit the map on the same browser from which they added the entry, they should be able to make changes to it, regardless of whether they are using a smart phone browser, desktop or laptop.

      • I sent 3 mails and contacted you on skype for deleting some pin on the map. No feed-back. Thank you very much!

        • Hi Vasilica,
Looks like you caught us on a weekend. We’ve delete the entries on the map. Let us know if we can provide any additional assistance.

  • The edit URL doesn’t seem to be provided if using a mobile phone browser (like safari). Is there a way to get the URL when adding a pin from a mobile phone?

    • Hi Mike,
Yes, there is no edit link provided when adding through a mobile device. If you visit the map from the same mobile device again, then you should be able to make changes to the entries you added through that device.

    • Hi Kim,
When you use the Edit URL that should take you to the map with an edit dialog for the entry opened. There is a Delete button in that dialog.

  • I added myself to someone else’s map. No URL was sent and I can’t edit or remove the information. The map maker made it for a group and now controls all of the information. Can you help? Many people have privacy concerns.

  • Could you let members edit their own balloons? I think it’d be quite helpful if they make a mistake. This is only if they mess up and accidentally close the URL, thinking it’s just a pop up like I did.

  • You do know cookies go stale. This is not a good method of long term authentication. Why even have a sign up then??? What happens when time passes and the cookie gets thrown away. Now how do you edit your own marker? Sure the Admin can do it. but what if they are not longer available? now what?

    • Hi James,
You are right, cookies are not very reliable over time and across browsers. We do give out a URL when you first add an entry. That URL is valid forever to make changes to that particular entry. You can record that URL for future changes.
We’ll look into tying entries added to registered users so they can still make changes.
      Pankaj
